The island I chose to call home
My name is Manuela. For 12 years, my work aboard cruise ships took me around the world. Travel was part of my everyday life, and I had the opportunity to see extraordinary destinations. Then, in 2011, I discovered Roatán. I immediately fell in love with this beautiful Caribbean island.
After years of traveling, I chose Roatán as my home and finally moved here in 2019. To me, it is the best place on Earth. That is a personal feeling, not a promise that every traveler will want the same kind of holiday. It is simply how much this island means to me.
Today I am part of Roatán Tours Hernández. Helping visitors discover the island is a lovely way to share that love. I want you to meet more than a destination on your itinerary: the beaches, nature, food and communities all belong to a place that people call home.
My cruise-ship background also shapes the way I think about a day ashore. You may have only one port call, a family with different interests and a firm time to return. I would rather help you choose a few things that really suit you than encourage you to squeeze everything into one rushed day.
This guide brings together the experiences you can consider, the private tours our team offers and the practical details that matter before booking. I have kept those things separate: an island attraction is not necessarily ours to operate, and a suggested stop is not automatically included in a tour.

Roatán is more than one beach
Roatán is one of the Bay Islands of Honduras, in the Caribbean Sea. Its shoreline, green hills, reef and coastal communities give you very different ways to spend your visit. A quiet beach day, a snorkeling outing and an East End cultural visit are not interchangeable experiences.
When you ask me about the best things to do in Roatán, I start with what you enjoy. Would you rather spend time in the water, explore local life, taste something new or combine a little sightseeing with time to relax? There is no need to follow somebody else’s perfect itinerary.
For cruise visitors, the right choice also depends on your port and the time available. For hotel guests, it depends on where you are staying and how you want to spend the day. Share those details with us before we suggest a route.

Two cruise ports, two different meeting points
Please check your ship’s itinerary before booking. Isla Tropicale and Coxen Hole are different ports. Isla Tropicale and Mahogany Bay, however, are two names for the same port. Knowing which one you arrive at is much more useful than trying to recognize a generic cruise-ship photograph.
Isla Tropicale / Mahogany Bay

Isla Tropicale is the current name of the port formerly known as Mahogany Bay. If your itinerary still says Mahogany Bay, you are looking at the same location, not an additional port.
For our private tours, walk approximately 10–15 minutes from the cruise terminal, through and outside the port gate, to the designated independent private-tour pickup area. Carlos Hernández or a Roatán Tours Hernández representative will wait with a company identification sign. Pickup is not beside the ship.
I recommend reading our dedicated pickup page and confirming your arrangements when booking. If walking or mobility is a concern, tell us beforehand rather than assuming the meeting point can be changed.
Read the pickup instructions: Isla Tropicale / Mahogany BayCoxen Hole

The Port of Roatán at Coxen Hole is the island’s other cruise port. It is not Isla Tropicale, so please do not use Mahogany Bay directions for this arrival.
For a booked private excursion with us, meet directly outside the cruise port gate. Carlos Hernández or a Roatán Tours Hernández representative will be waiting with our company identification sign. Confirm the meeting details with the team before your visit.

01. Take time for West Bay Beach

West Bay is a natural place to consider if your idea of Roatán is a beach and Caribbean water. I would make room to enjoy it rather than treat it as a photograph taken between other stops. Think about whether you want beach time itself or an organized resort visit with arrangements confirmed in advance.
Our Private Day Pass at a Beach Resort is one option to discuss with the team. Read its details and ask which facilities, entry arrangements and services apply to your quote. A beach recommendation is not a promise of free access to a resort or an inclusion in every island tour.
02. Explore West End at your own pace
West End is another part of the island to consider for a coastal visit, sightseeing or some local shopping. I like the idea of leaving space in an itinerary to look around without having every minute assigned to an activity. You can decide whether time on land or time on the water matters more to you.
Our snorkeling and glass-bottom boat tour pages include West End in their itineraries. They are different experiences, not a single combined package. Ask Carlos what your chosen tour allows and confirm shopping stops, timing and any extra costs before booking.
03. Discover the reef without rushing it

For visitors who enjoy the sea, snorkeling or guided diving can be the focus of the day rather than an afterthought. I would choose the activity around your swimming ability and comfort in the water, not just the most striking photograph.
We list separate snorkeling and guided ocean-diving tours, both with a minimum of two guests. Tell the team about children, experience and any health considerations. Equipment, conditions and operator requirements need confirmation. Please never touch or stand on coral, and do not expect a particular animal to appear on demand.
04. Meet island wildlife responsibly

Sloths, monkeys, iguanas and tropical birds interest many of our guests. I understand the excitement, but I want the visit to be about the animals, not simply getting a picture. Follow the venue’s instructions, keep movements calm and do not assume every animal can be touched or held.
Our Sloth & Monkey Park and Sloth, Monkey & Iguana tours offer two different wildlife-focused choices. Check the individual pages and ask about the venue and arrangements for your date. A photograph shows a moment; it does not guarantee an encounter, a handling opportunity or identical conditions for every visitor.
05. Look beyond the beach to the mangroves

The East End gives you another way to see Roatán. Mangrove waterways shift the focus from an open beach to the relationship between land, water and coastal life. For me, this is a useful reminder that the island’s beauty is not limited to its best-known shorelines.
Our East End, Mangroves & Garifuna tour is the relevant starting point if this interests you. Read the itinerary and ask which boat arrangements and stops are included in your quote. Conditions and availability matter, and I would rather you know what is confirmed than imagine a fixed route from a photograph.
06. Make room for Garifuna culture and Punta Gorda

A visit to Roatán should leave room for the people who live here. Punta Gorda and Garifuna culture offer a different perspective from a day centered only on attractions. I encourage visitors to approach community stops with curiosity, courtesy and a willingness to listen.
The East End tour includes cultural interests alongside its other stops. Ask what is planned for your visit; do not assume a performance or specific event is guaranteed. Ask before photographing people, respect local spaces and remember that a community is somebody’s home, not a stage built for our itinerary.
07. See communities, coastlines and island viewpoints
Sometimes the most useful way to begin is with an island sightseeing tour. Different coastal communities and viewpoints help you understand how the places on your map fit together. You do not have to book a strenuous activity to enjoy a thoughtful day exploring Roatán.
Our Sightseeing, Local Shopping & Chocolate Factory tour offers a defined theme, while the Custom Island Tour is shaped around your interests. Tell Carlos what you most want to see and what you would rather skip. Optional stops and entry fees should be agreed, not assumed to be included.
08. Taste the island, not just photograph it

Food is a lovely way to make travel feel less abstract. If Honduran and Caribbean flavors interest you, allow time for them instead of adding a hurried meal at the end of a crowded route. Share allergies, dietary needs and preferences before the team suggests arrangements.
Our culinary tour and East End tour are useful pages to explore for this kind of day. They have different itineraries. The food photograph here is inspiration from the island, not a promised menu or a statement that meals are included. Confirm tasting stops, meals and any additional charges when booking.
09. Follow your curiosity through chocolate, coffee and rum

Local products can give a sightseeing day a focus. Chocolate, coffee and rum are interests to discuss if you enjoy learning about what you taste and bringing something home. I would choose stops that genuinely interest you rather than feel obliged to buy at every place you visit.
Our Culinary Island Trip brings together chocolate, coffee, rum and sightseeing. The sightseeing and shopping tour also visits a chocolate factory, but it is not the same itinerary. Check each page for current details and ask which tastings, purchases or meals are included. Do not treat a shop photo as a guaranteed product selection.
10. Build a private day around what matters to you
This is where I would start if your group has several interests. A private island tour lets us discuss what you want from Roatán instead of asking you to fit a ready-made idea of the perfect day. Perhaps your priority is scenery, local shopping or simply a gentler pace.
Our Custom Island Tour has a minimum of two guests. Send Carlos your group size, arrival details and interests so he can confirm a realistic route. Personalization is a conversation, not a guarantee that every request or every combination of attractions is possible within your time ashore.
11. Choose a day that works for the children too
For families, I would plan around the children’s comfort as well as the adults’ wish list. Time in the water, wildlife visits and beach time ask different things of a child. A shorter list of priorities can leave space for breaks and make the day easier for everyone.
Our snorkeling tour is described as great for kids, subject to swimming ability, suitable equipment and conditions confirmed with the guide. Children aged four and under receive free transportation on all our tours; this does not mean free attraction admission or activities. Ask about age, accessibility and participation requirements for each stop.
12. Let a beach visit be enough
You do not need a packed itinerary to make your visit worthwhile. A beach-resort day or a private-island beach visit may be a better match if you want time to relax by the Caribbean Sea. I would rather you choose that honestly than book activities you do not really want.
We have separate Beach Resort Day Pass and Private Island Beach tour pages. Confirm access, facilities, transfers and any food or drink arrangements for the option you choose. “Private island” in a tour title should not be read as a promise that you have an entire island exclusively to yourself.
13. Find an adventure that fits your comfort level
Ziplining, ATV riding and horseback riding bring very different kinds of movement into an island day. I would choose between them based on your comfort and interests, not assume they are equally suitable for everyone. Let the team know about mobility, health concerns and children in your party.
We offer separate Animal Adventure & Zipline, Animal Adventure & ATV and Horseback Riding tours. The individual pages explain their themes. Ask about operator rules, equipment and participation requirements before committing, and confirm the stops in your chosen package rather than expecting all three activities in one booking.
14. Consider a different view from the water
A glass-bottom boat can be worth discussing if you are curious about the sea but do not want a snorkeling-focused day. A fishing charter is a very different option for a group that wants its outing centered on time aboard a boat.
Our Glass Bottom Boat & West End tour and Deep Sea Fishing charter have separate arrangements and pricing structures. Please read the details and confirm conditions, group size and suitability. Boat trips depend on conditions; a view of marine life or a particular catch can never be promised by a travel guide.
A personal welcome, with the practical details agreed
At Roatán Tours Hernández, our booked tours include pickup in a modern air-conditioned vehicle, complimentary vehicle Wi-Fi when available, and return transportation to your cruise port or hotel. Return service is part of the booked excursion, with the arrangements confirmed around your visit.
That commitment is not a promise that traffic, weather or road closures cannot happen. Share your ship name, arrival port, date, group size and all-aboard deadline. Follow the agreed schedule and keep the team informed of changes. For hotel guests, send your accommodation name and location.
If you need a separate airport or hotel transfer, the price depends on the location and is confirmed at booking once you share your hotel information. I do not want you to mistake a tour’s included transportation for a universal fixed-price transfer service.
Booking is confirmed only when you receive confirmation from Roatán Tours Hernández. Ask about the selected stops, admissions and any extras before paying, and read our existing payment and cancellation policy rather than relying on a general travel article.
Cancellation & refund policyThe small details I would plan before a visit
Payments and currency
Ask which currency a vendor accepts and agree prices and change before paying. Our team currently accepts Crypto, Zelle, PayPal and cash; card support is coming soon, not a working card checkout. Do not assume every island business accepts the same methods or Bitcoin.
Languages
Spanish is Honduras’s official language, and English is widely spoken on Roatán. Our team helps guests in English, German and Spanish. If language matters for your tour, confirm who will be guiding your group.
Weather and what to bring
Plan for tropical warmth, possible rain and a day outdoors. Bring drinking water, sun protection, comfortable footwear and the items your chosen activity requires. For water outings, ask about equipment and bring a dry change of clothes if useful.
Getting around
Agree pickup, stops and return arrangements in advance. Do not estimate a journey from a straight line on a map. Your port, hotel location, route and conditions all affect what is sensible to plan.
Cruise schedules
Check your ship’s time and all-aboard deadline, not only the clock on your phone. Tell the team the schedule and follow your confirmed return plan. Leave ambitions for extra stops out of the day unless Carlos confirms they fit.
Children and individual needs
Send children’s ages and any mobility, dietary or health needs before booking. Free transportation for children aged four and under is not free admission. Activities and equipment must be suitable for the individual guest.
Communities and wildlife
Ask permission before photographing people, respect private spaces and follow venue instructions around animals. Do not feed wildlife or assume touching is appropriate. Take your rubbish with you.
Protecting the reef
Keep your distance from coral and marine animals. Never stand on the reef or remove anything from it. Follow the water guide’s instructions and ask about appropriate sun protection for your activity.
Questions I would ask before a Roatán visit
What are the best things to do in Roatán?
That depends on what you enjoy: beaches, snorkeling, wildlife, sightseeing, local food and East End mangroves or culture are different options. Choose a few priorities and confirm a suitable itinerary, rather than trying to fit the whole island into one day.
Is Roatán worth visiting on a cruise?
For me, absolutely: it is the island I chose as home. A port call can give you time to discover one side of it. What fits depends on your ship’s schedule, arrival port and chosen excursion.
Which cruise port will my ship arrive at?
Check the current itinerary with your cruise operator. Roatán has Isla Tropicale, formerly Mahogany Bay, and the Port of Roatán at Coxen Hole. Send the confirmed port to us before booking.
Is Isla Tropicale the same as Mahogany Bay?
Yes. Isla Tropicale is the current name of the port formerly called Mahogany Bay. They are the same location.
What is the difference between Mahogany Bay and Coxen Hole?
They are different cruise ports with different private-tour meeting points. Mahogany Bay is now Isla Tropicale; Coxen Hole is the Port of Roatán.
Can I book a private Roatán tour independently?
Yes, you can contact Roatán Tours Hernández directly to discuss availability. Your booking is confirmed only after you receive confirmation from our team.
Where will my tour guide meet me?
At Isla Tropicale, walk approximately 10–15 minutes from the terminal through and outside the gate to the independent private-tour pickup area. At Coxen Hole, meet directly outside the gate. Carlos or our representative waits with a company sign; confirm your arrangements beforehand.
Are your excursions suitable for families?
Many of our tour themes appeal to families, but suitability depends on ages, needs and the chosen activities. Tell us about your children and confirm operator requirements. Children aged four and under receive free transportation, not automatically free admission or activities.
Is transportation included?
Our booked tours include pickup in an air-conditioned vehicle and return to the cruise port or hotel. Wi-Fi is complimentary when available. Separate airport and hotel transfer quotes depend on location.
Can I visit more than one attraction, and can hotel guests book too?
Ask Carlos what fits your selected tour, time and interests; combinations are not automatically included. Hotel guests can inquire too: share the accommodation name and location so pickup and return arrangements can be confirmed.
